Most of us are familiar with Word, as it has been a staple in the business world since the early 1980’s, but OneNote, on the other hand, is much newer. Word to submit your papers.Microsoft has two seemingly-similar writing programs available to their users: Microsoft Word and Microsoft OneNote. I can draft my papers in there and then it’s easy to copy and paste into a word document. my school notebook is split by class and then I have class notes and assignments. My personal OneNote Notebook is split into the areas of my life I need to remember things - siblings, health, doctor appointments, a “parking lot” where I leave things to think about, books on my wish list etc. It is split into categories: daily - where I take daily notes of whatever I’m doing, Documentation - further split into the 6 areas I support for my office, Meetings - where it’s further decided by how my office/department/team/projects meet, and lastly Goals - split by year, divided by goals, plans, and notes on how I plan to accomplish them. I have a personal OneNote Notebook, a Work OneNote Notebook, and a School OneNote Notebook. I use both and use OneNote almost exclusively and then Word only for publishing reports. Where in Word you have no way to link documents except for in a folder structure and then having to open each individual document. You can pop between pages, sections and groups. Word = standard for writing papers to turn in.Ĭomparing = OneNote is your virtual notebook. In PC land it will make the subject the title of the Page and import the email including basic headers. Example: Send an Email from Outlook to OneNote. I don’t like how Microsoft hasn’t released all the tools PC has on a Mac. OneNote negatives: I use both a Mac and a PC. You can collaborate w others in your tenant (organization). You can open multiple notebooks from different accounts. You can color code, add pictures, audio, & writing. OneNote positives: Pages, Tabs, Sections. Also as a team manager it is so much easier to review people's work when it is in OneNote so I don't have to open loads a different word documents and everyone knows what is in the team OneNote is the latest information. It shows you the username of who changed what and where and the version history is much quicker to the open and view then word. So if you record your lectures you can drop the recording in the OneNote page where you have your notes, just in case you need it later.įourth, admittedly this might be less useful for a student, but the collaboration abilities of OneNote I find much easier than word. Third, you can embed documents, audio files, just about any file in a OneNote page. One of my biggest headaches with word as having to keep opening multiple documents to see if it is what I was looking for. There are so many times where I forget where something is and I can search all of my notebooks and sections and quickly flip through the pages in the search results to see if it has what I'm looking for. Through drag-and-drop you can move entire pages or sections to other sections, section collections or even other notebooks that you have open client-side. Professionally I almost exclusively use OneNote ( I prefer the client side application over the web) for notes / anything internal for a team and always encourage others to do so for a couple reasons.įirst, it is so much easier to reorganize notes after you have taken them.
